A fishy meal
I use the term "economy rice" loosely when it comes to "chap fan" (mixed rice). This plate of "chap fan" is sold in an air-conditioned eatery so it is expected that the price will be a bit higher than hot coffee shop "chap fan".
Fried fish (is this ikan kembung?), stir fried long beans and brinjals, and stir fried cabbage with carrots with rice (self service when it comes to the rice) - MYR7 and this is the same eatery that sold the "unknown food". The question is why was the "unknown food" more expensive than this fish meal? I think the answer is (fried squids and capsicum) is more expensive than (a fried fish with cabbage).

Hello mun ... some chap fan are not cheap especially those in air-cond malls. I rather go for something exciting like a salmon bento. :)

DeleteI have chap fan every weekday. No time to cook. This is the 'best' alternative.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Buy raw fish to deep fry takes time and effort.

DeleteI used to have a lot of chap fan in my first 2 years in Penang, then I'm getting sick of them. The few stalls near where I stay, their dish selections are all pretty impressive, but all of them have 1 big flaw: the grand total of their vege dishes is always the same: 3. 1 x choy sum, 1 x cabbage, 1 x ladies finger, then the rest are meat meat meat meat meat..
ReplyDeleteHere the stalls have more vege than yours. Angle beans, kangkung, yinchoy, brinjal, bittergourd and others.

DeleteOh yes, I've also been to coffeeshops with air condition, so the price of the food there a bit high.. Like one plate of rice, cost about RM7, or one bowl of pork mee cost around RM6.50, serious.. And one plate of char kuey teow around RM6 too.. So we seldom go there..

Deletehaving chap fan can be dangerous sometimes, I mean the price you pay, haha.. sometimes can be very expensive and you only realized you picked some expensive dish when you asked the boss.. squid?? oh, that certainly is expensive and counted by pieces, I avoid them.. worse experience is when I had chap fan at mamak stalls, the price is never standard~~ @.@"
ReplyDeleteThere is one lady stall owner who will tell you the price of the item out loud without you asking if she thinks that item is expensive. That day she told a young girl that piece of fish is myr5 and the girl quickly put back the fish. Hahaha.
DeleteRM7, ok lah. Got aircon mah. I love that fish! RM2 at the roadside Malay stall that I frequent here, Chinese ones at least RM3, I think. I prefer the Malay ones - they will marinate with some nice ingredients before frying - nicer. Chinese ones, usually plain.

DeleteTechnically 'chap fun' is 'mixed rice' so I guess it doesn't have to be 'cheap'. Certainly food courts have these now at non-economy prices! RM7 isn't too bad for that. Eh you eat so little rice. :)

DeleteFish is expensive.. over here one piece is around RM3... plus rice and vege.. maybe RM6 .. then I went to your unknown post... that one is even more expensive.. hahaha... RM9.. averagely it is RM3 per dish?

ReplyDeleteIn town and office complexes, the cheapest meal will be "economy" meals even though it is more expensive when compared to old residential area or outskirts of town.

ReplyDeleteThey always charge more when you take fish. Maybe RM2 -3 per piece
I don't eat chap fan in food courts in malls too. This is in an office complex and is one of the cheaper halal eatery within walking distance.
