Porridge Meng at Tim Won

There are days that he will want to eat Cantonese style congee and not TeoChew style congee and we will go to Tim Won, a nearby coffee shop for a bowl of hot and affordable congee priced at around MYR 7. Fatty Mok yong tofu coffee shop also has Cantonese style congee. Now that we are not dining out, we couldn't do so. But we could buy takeaway congee and eat it at home so we did just that. Although the price is higher when we order it via the food panda app, we did that because we didn't want to hang around the coffee shop where people have removed their masks to eat their food and some are still hanging around having a good leisure time sipping their coffees with their masks off, happily chatting animatedly to their friends, not realizing that they shouldn't be letting their saliva fly everywhere, to wait for the congee to be prepared.

Teochew style congee has clear soft expanded individual grains of rice swimming in water whereas Cantonese style congee is just a mushy bowl of smooth thick liquid cooked from rice, grains of rice are not visible at all, they have been cooked until they all seemed to have melted into the water.

A bowl of Cantonese style congee of ginger, minced pork meat, salted eggs and century eggs topped with spring onions.

The congee is priced higher in the app but after a pickup discount, the price is acceptable. The congee stall is operated by a very old lady.

  1. Been eating a lot of porridge lately, cooking my own with whatever leftover rice there is...instead of frying it like before.

    1. Non oily porridge is better but since you are watching your sugar level, better to eat 8 grains congee instead of white basmati congee.

  5. Ah so that's the difference between the styles. I just order Hon Kee famous porridge and hubby as usual was complaining he didn't like that kind of porridge. Which would be Cantonese style according to your post.
