What will be next?

STP highlighted a new feature of Google (blogger) in his post entitled "Can you find it..." and I was surprised when told in the comment that my blog has it too. As can be seen from the picture below, the "Word Verification" has been set to "No" but still the pictures came out to be selected for non-google user accounts / non-blogger usernames.

I tested it using my WordPress ID and found it to be true. Even though the setting is no, the picture selection will still pop out and is required. For those with WordPress ID who also owns a gmail ID (google account) could also login to their gmail ID and use that google ID to leave a comment and the picture selection will not pop up.

The only other way is to turn on moderation for all comments. When this is done, then there is no need to prove that you are not a robot. But I do not want to do that because I want the comments to appear immediately and not after I am available to approve them so I hope those users with no google/blogger account will tolerate this picture selection and continue to leave comment here because I truly appreciate each and everyone of your comments.

Then I found an explanation by google on why they did this (please refer to the screen capture below). They thought it would be easier for the users to select pictures instead of typing in text. But it is not easier when the pictures are ambiguous. I wonder what they would come up with next.

  1. Hey! I haven't seen those with animals - for me, it is always food, food and more food and I guess because of the limited pictures that they have, they get recycled. I do wish they would be more straight forward - like a sandwich would be a sandwich not a burger...and the pictures to pick and match should be clear, easily identified.

I have a google.com account but I would have to sign in. I would rather have the food photos than do that! That is why I do not like people using DISCUZ for their comment box - have to sign in, comment (in as many posts one wishes - thankfully, no need to sign in each time) and then sign out again. Such a chore, a real nuisance. Surely people do not take pleasure in making their friends' lives miserable. Tsk! Tsk!

    1. I also have only encountered food pictures. I don't know why even though I am using blogger, I still need to prove that I am not a robot at kuchingnite blog. Blame it on the robots who keep spamming people until Google has to take this action. :(

  2. I also set the verification to NO but why it is still exist I am curious. I do agree with you when the picture can be confusing and ambiguous.

    1. I am using blogger but I still need to prove that I am not a robot at your kuchingnite blog. That's why I know about the pictures selection. Other blogspot blogs I do not need to do that.

  3. Just like you, I wasn't aware of it until STP highlighted it. So, I went into settings and turned off the only option there....word verification but realised it doesn't work after I read your comments. I have no problem commenting on your blog coz we're both on Blogspot. I can understand the inconvenience one has to go through each and every time just to comment but I do appreciate that they continue to comment too.

    1. I guess we need to live with it until Google comes up with a new thing.

  7. Interesting! I'm not aware of this, Mun. It's so hard to catch up as things are moving so fast......

  9. I am surprised so many do not realize it. This means Google has been sneaky and ambiguous with their ID verification protocols. But lately I have not been getting those picture or word selections anymore. I think they check for a certain number of times, then turn it off for the same ID.

It is nothing worth worrying about lah. I don't think regular readers would stop commenting just because of some picture selections. Most people who use the internet would understand why sometimes security features are used. As long as it is not overly tedious then it is okay.

    1. Thanks for the additional info that after a few times, it did not ask you to prove that you are not a robot anytime.

    2. Oh, the prove-you-are-not-robot thing still there, but just need to tick it, no more word or picture verification.

    3. Oh, so you still need to click. Thanks for clarifying this.

  10. I also prefer pictures rather than words verification, I found the found sometimes can't read is a bit annoying.
