T2014 In a lane

The highlight of this meal is the pork knuckle (top). One is supposed to take a piece and to gnaw at the thick skin and little meat that is on it according to my Taiwanese friend. Needless to say I did not eat that dish.

Stinky tofu (left), pickled mustard greens (front) and some greens stir fried with beancurd strips I think.

The eatery is located in this tiny lane. Our Taiwanese friend brought us here and told us locals like the food here especially the pork knuckle. As you can see from the signboards, there are 3 different eateries located here and I can't even remember which one it was.

  1. Nice! You're in Taiwan! :)

I was in Taiwan earlier this year too, ate at a lot of interesting places including a bubble milk tea hot pot place! They also have milk/cream hot pots, it sounds funny but it tastes wonderful.

  3. Best to go some place where one has friends to bring to such delightful nook and cranny that locals frequent, not the tourist traps.

There was a Taiwanese restaurant in Singapore, Orchard Road, in the 70's and the attraction there was the Taiwanese sweet potato porridge - my (late) grandpa who took me there said the poor farmers added the tuber to the porridge as rice was too expensive for them. These days, sweet potatoes are worth their weight in gold. I wonder if they have that in Taiwan, very nice!

    1. Yes, I have eaten sweet potatoes porridge in Taiwan before. They call sweet potatoes di gua meaning ground melon.

  4. The pork knuckle looks a bit white and clear.. Looks like those "chu zhang" used to boil soup, then scoop it out and cut into chunks..

  5. You have Taiwanese friends there? How nice, great to have local friends around, certainly they will take you to those places where tourists won't go, hehe!

  6. I was wondering why you would avoid that pork knuckle until I realised it was not roasted till crispy. Ha ha... I also avoid that fatty white colours meat. This is China style of preparation.

I used to have a business associate who would bring us to all the best local eateries but I never liked his taste and choice of all types of blood and spare parts. I found many nicer places on my own.

  8. Hmmm....since the pork knuckle is the highlight, you didn't even try? It doesn't look that appetising but I am sure it must have tasted better than its looks.

  11. From the looks, I don't think I'll enjoy the stinky tofu and pork knuckle, so I won't even try. The greens I'll gladly have.

  12. The pork knuckles look very pale so I am guessing that it is just boiled plain? Though I love pork knuckles, this one does not look too appetizing.

  13. White white one... I'm not used to not seeing pork knuckles in dark dark gravy...

Also I can see why this place is local. In touristy places, they will probably dress the stinky tofu up nicely to serve...

    1. Hahaha, how would you dress them up then to serve tourists?

  15. I dislike sourish, strong smell and preserved food. I guess these dishes wouldn't suit my palate. I tink I will only eat the green stir fry.
