Yap Yin or Yip Yan

Braised Pork Knuckle with chicken feet and pork intestine - MYR38 - very, very flavourful dish though it may look like a mess in the photo above. The pork meat and the pork intestine were braised until they just melt in your mouth.

Bak Kut Teh for 3 pax - MYR33 - the soup has a unique herbal taste that I have not tasted in other bak kut teh before and I can't identify what taste that is.

Yin Choy (Amaranth Greens) stirfried with garlic - MYR12

Very crunchy and thinly sliced lotus roots with cashew nuts - MYR18 - with the natural sweetness of the lotus roots. I noticed that every table has ordered this dish.

Steamed village chicken (half) - MYR30 - this village chicken must have exercised a lot running freely around the village because the meat is very, very tough. I gave up eating this and surrendered my half eaten piece of chicken meat to my spouse.

Steamed "Sang" Fish - MYR70 - the fish meat was presented in slices and a bottle of "chicken essence"  was poured onto the fish when it was served thus the high price. With other items such as tea and rice, the total bill came up to around MYR238 for 10 pax.

This is the place - Yap Yin (Hakka) and also known as Yip Yan (Cantonese), Jalan Sekolah, Seri Kembangan. A famous HK food tv programme has featured this place before.

The external kitchen where the staff cooked the food.

Interior - we were early so the tables were still available when this photo was taken but all the tables later were fully occupied. It is not easy to find a parking spot around this area.

  1. The BKT looks different. Is the unique herb taste nice? I love BKT and I like them thick. Recently I've grown fond of dry BKT. Yums!

    1. No. 1 is pork knuckle mainly. You can eat that but not the pork intestine.

  7. Thanks for sharing Mun! :)

Learn something new everyday - Amaranth Greens, I've always wondered what that refers to. I've heard it compared to kale as a superfood.

Oh, what is that fish? Is it catfish or haruan?

    1. But you have strong teeth so can tackle the tough meat.

  9. Don't eat wobbly stuff so the braised pork knuckle is out for me (but I do know that the sauce is really good).
Could it be that the village chicken you ate is actually kampong chicken coz my chicken vendor told me that kampong chicken has a yellower skin and the meat is tougher (I always thought that village chicken and kampong chicken are one and the same).

    1. That is a kampong chicken. I just translate it to village chicken. You mean there is another type of chicken called village chicken?

  12. i tink i will like the bak kut teh....I can tolerate herbal taste that is not too overpowering. Their version of BKT looks different....from the picture the soup looks more like gravy type.

  13. I'd rather have my Tesco cheapo chicken than kampung chicken hehe. Used to think kampung was the 'premium' one. Chewed on quite a few tough chickens before concluding it's the chicken and not the cook that's the problem!
