Come fly with me

Year end now, annual leaves have to be cleared or else they will be burned. Yesterday I went with my extended family to the mall to do our weekly grocery shopping. We walked past Tim Ho Wan at 10.30 am and saw about 15 persons in the queue and thought why not take a virtual trip to HK.

The 30 minutes on the plane were well spent by doing some catching up with each other. Soon we were given the order chit to make our selections before we were ushered into the restaurant at 11 am when it opens for business.

Baked Bun with BBQ Pork - MYR10.80 for three in a serving and we order two servings. This is one of their 4 signature dishes known as "Big 4 Heavenly King".

I like the pastry as it is soft, light, moist, a bit chewy and a bit sweet as if having a light sugar coating over it. The pork fillings in it are on the sweet side. Overall it has a subtle taste, without any overpowering distinct taste so I guess big eaters can eat a few at one go without feeling satiated.

Vermicelli Roll with Pig's Liver - MYR10.80 - 1 of the 4 signature dishes. The liver tastes like how a liver should taste so it is all good except I find it difficult to accept the combination of HK ccf with the pig's liver taste. Give me pig's liver in a bowl of hot soup and mee hoon, I will like it but pig's livers with HK ccf - the pig's livers' taste seems too strong to go with HK ccf.

Pan Fried Carrot Cake - MYR9.80 - 1 of the 4 signature dishes. Very soft, full of white radish taste and very flavourful.

Steamed Egg Cake - MYR7.80 - 1 of the 4 signature dishes. I like this - very soft, moist, and very tasty - caramelized brown sugar taste. Will order this again.

Steamed Spinach (Por Choy) Dumpling - MYR7.80 for 3 in a serving. The best vegetable steamed dumpling I have eaten so far. Better than Din Tai Fung's steamed vegetable dumpling which is too dry.

Filled with spinach and not oily.

Plain Vermicelli Roll with sweet and sour sesame sauce - MYR7.80 - the magic is in the sauce. Nice unless you don't like the taste of sesame and peanut.

Beef meatballs - MYR7.80 - soft and not bouncy. I can taste citrus peels in them. We have eaten tastier ones in other restaurants in HK.

Osmanthus cake - MYR6.80 - very nice refreshing jelly with osmanthus flower and lots of goji berries. Only slightly sweet so can eat more at one go.

Mango Sago Pomelo - MYR8.80 - can tell that it is made with real mangoes but I can't taste the sago, seems to have melted.

Wasabi Salad Prawn Dumpling - MYR10.80 - I like that the prawns inside are not those overly bouncy types that have been soaked in sugar water/syrup, but just firm.

Can see the whole prawn in it.

What is dim sum without eating siew mai - MYR10.80 - taste just right, not too salty and not too porky.

Har Kao (Prawn Dumplings) - MYR11.80 - firm but not overly bouncy prawns in them. One of the better ones that I have eaten.

Can see the whole prawn in it too.

Congee with lean pork and century egg - MYR9.80 - can give this a miss since I find we can order similar quality congee in other restaurants too.

Hot chinese tea - MYR2 for one (refillable)

Glutinous rice in lotus leaf - MYR12.80 - we were too full by then so took this home without even unwrapping it.

The queue outside when we left. Now they have put up the guidance railings to help direct the queue.

Back home in the evening, we ate the glutinous rice.

Mushroom, waxed meat and meat in it but the rice is too compacted so a bit too firm for our liking.

Please click on the menu for a larger version where you can read the words. There are only 25 food items in the menu and we have ordered 14 items and our bill inclusive of service charge and tax came up to MYR197.75 because they calculated the 6% gov. tax on the total bill plus the 10% service charge so charged us an extra RM1.02.

Without an overly high expectation of the food here, I would say this is one of the best dim sum I have eaten in KL so far because I like the subtle taste although the choices are limited and the prices are high. People who like very flavourful food with strong taste like curry, sambal may not like the food here. I will definitely return for its baked bun with BBQ pork, steamed egg cake and spinach dumplings when I have an occasion to celebrate to justify spending some money.

  1. OMG! The queue is ridiculous!

I thought it was one line, didn't know it was a switchboard queue like at airport check-in. It's even more popular that the original Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong which got the Michelin star (and we had to wait ages for that too).

I'll love to try this place out since I been to the one in HK and see if there's any difference - the pigs here and in HK taste different.

Thanks for the awesome review Mun, it makes me salivate coz a lot of things are stuff I'll love to eat again. Best dim sum in KL eh? We'll be sure to try it when I'm back! :)

  3. Oh yes I remember this place, the last time you went, you didnt go in coz of the queue.. Now you can go since it's a weekday and not so crowded. But seems like there is still so many ppl even though on a weekday.. My favourite would be the beef balls and wasabi prawn dumplings..

  6. ah, I thought why there were only 15 people lining up for this dimsum?? that's not quite convincing.. so, you were there even before the restaurant was opened for business!! first time you were early and can find something you wanted to eat, haha..

indeed the hottest place in town recently since its opening huh?? it's like everyone must be there to try the Michelin Star grade dimsum.. errr, I wonder if the crowd is the same from the previously very hot boat noodles house?? haha..

  7. I am so definitely not going to queue up under the hot sun for this, though I wanted to try their dimsum, many said it's very nice I heard.. anyway, that would be when the crowd is less and I do not have to wait long to be seated.. hopefully by then, they are still able to maintain their standard on the dimsum :p

  11. You're so lucky that the Q wasn't that long (on a weekday). Don't know when I'll get to try.

  12. If the queue line is moving fast, I won't mind queuing. That is if the food is real good. Thank you for sharing with us.

  13. I just walked pass that restaurant a few days ago and was shocked to see the queue which was longer than your photo. It was even raining and I thought the people were crazy but then, the food must be really good! I must try!

  17. I think the place is over-rated. The skin of the rice rolls are too thick; I like mine really thin. I took to the opportunity to visit once when there wasn't any queue. Thank goodness, else hubby & I would be so upset cause we had high expectation......

    1. You did not like any of their food? I am the opposite, I like the rice rolls to be thick so that I can chew on them instead of slurping them. :D

  18. I don't mind queuing up if the food is good. But the food really looks appetizing.
