Best Kaya Roll

This is the best kaya roll that I have ever eaten - MYR14.50 for one whole roll. The price was only MYR10 for a whole roll 19 years ago. I have been eating it for that many years and the taste is just as good as before.

The cake is dense unlike the texture of the popular JJ Swiss Roll and I prefer kaya instead of cream. The cake tastes like those baked "egg cake" (kai tan koh) - a slight eggy taste - and is a bit sweeter than I would have preferred but this can be excused as other kaya rolls are 2 or 3 times sweeter than this one.

This old lady has been selling her baked goods (egg tarts, kaya jam, kaya rolls and etc) for as long as I know of this stall which is 19 years ago, at the entrance of a lane off Jalan Yap Ah Loy in the center of KL town.

I like this kaya roll better than those sold by Yut Kee. If you don't believe me that this is the best kaya roll, you can read this famous blogger's review.

  1. Wish I could taste that. Like my friend living in the US. When he came back, he would look for the old-school pao skin - none of those made from the whitened, enriched, improved or whatever flour...and none of those cotton-like dim sum pao skin for him.

Love such traditional stuff - they sure don't make 'em like they used to anymore. Sad that the younger ones are not keen on carrying on the trade and generally, young people are not keen to eat even. Will eventually die out, fade into oblivion...all these and part of our culture and identity dies with them. :(

  7. I do believe you that these are very good kaya rolls (and vouched by Jason Yeoh)...but, unfortunately T_T, it's in a part of town that I don't go to, so I can't get to taste these delicious rolls (which was featured on Axian Food Adventures in one of his episodes on food from Chinatown)...and, worst still, most of them are closed on Sundays (at a time when traffic is probably bearable).

  14. I'll go and get a piece this week! :)

I've tried Yut Kee's one, I quite like their food last time, and if it's better than Yut Kee, I'll be sure to try it out and share it with my better half. I'm quite surprised at the price - bakeries sell it for cheaper but the way you described it sounds very good.

I like the classic, old fashioned way of baking, and I like the idea of this old woman selling kaya rolls from her small stall for over 19 years! :)

    1. Do you need to book if you buy a whole roll? I can see that she doesn't have many in her cart.

Do you think going Friday afternoon or Saturday is better? Thanks Mun! :)

    2. Better to go on Saturday morning, she opens at 9am. Once I went at 12.30pm on Friday and she sold out everything except tubs of kaya. She said a customer bought 10 kaya rolls. I have not booked before because I do not whether she has a hp or not for you to call. :)

Wow! 9 am is really early. Haha! I shall make it though, maybe I'll go on Friday and see if she has a phone number first. Thanks again for the details Mun, much appreciated!
