Egg custard mooncake

My sister in law bought a box of HK Maxim's (美心) mini egg custard mooncakes (奶黄月餅) for MYR100 with 8 mini mooncakes in it and let us all try during the long weekend.

I ate half of the above piece so it is 1/8 of a mini mooncake. The fillings taste exactly like the fillings of my favourite lao sar bao but in solidified form. I find this a luxury food item and I definitely can't afford to eat this at MYR12.50 for a mooncake so I will just stick to lao sar bao.

Each mini egg custard mooncake is individually packed and can be found sold in the Klang valley at the individual mooncake stalls at major supermarkets.

  1. 1/8 of a mini mooncake, that's not very satisfying is it? I would've walloped the whole mooncake, but you are right, RM12.50 is too luxurious...

    2. To eat the whole mooncake, I find it rather cloying. You will have to drink chinese tea after that or you will feel nauseated since it is too creamy, thick and sweet.

  2. RM12.50 only? Here, those imported from the peninsula...not less than RM15/16....some a whole lot more. I certainly can't afford and it's really not worth it. Would rather though and eat something a lot nicer for that kind of money.

    1. These are MINI mooncakes. The size of one is only 1/6 the size of a normal MYR15/MYR16 mooncake so that means the adjusted price of this mini mooncake if you want to compare with normal size mooncake is MYR15x6 = MYR90 for one mini mooncake.

  3. mooncakes are surely a luxury thing nowadays.. just simple ones can cost you like RM15 now, and I think with this price we can get a box of nice ones from Ming Yue huh?? so not worth to get the (more and more expensive) mooncakes sometimes I think, but no choice there are demands whenever the festive comes.. probably I'll get some after the mid autumn at at least 50% off, haha!! : D

    1. Yes, you can so that explains the queue at Ming Yue. Of course there are differences between the texture of Ming Yue's mooncakes and these expensive mooncakes but those from Ming Yue's are good enough for normal consumption.

    1. Hahaha, Claire, I think it is difficult to cut this mini mooncake into 12 equal portions to make a portion around MYR1.

    2. These days, I eat to live more than I live to eat as I just eat the minimum necessary to keep me alive due to the rising price of tasty food.

  6. Hmm lao sar bao in a solidified form must be very much like... a salted egg yolk?

    1. No, it is not like a salted egg yolk because I can taste a special fragrant taste that does not exist in just salted egg yolk. That fragrant taste I think may come from condensed milk and butter or some other ingredients used to make the fillings.

    1. Haha, this mini mooncake lacks the oozing effect of lao sar bao.

    1. The HK Maxim stall is available at the entrance of Aeon groc at Midvalley and I think at One Utame (not sure where but maybe Isetan).

    2. Welcome! But I just been to Midvalley and asked the Mei Xin (Maxim) stall for this egg custard moon cake and was told that they were all sold out and to buy from their stall next year but must be early because they are very popular. Maybe One Utame still has stock.
