Yau Yu Ong Choy

"Yau Yu" is Cantonese for squid and "Ong Choy" is Cantonese for Water Spinach (Kang Kung).

I asked for the peanut sweet plum sauce to be served separately and not mixed into the dish and the old lady asked me using English, why I made such a request. I replied that I do not like to eat sauce and do not want to eat so much sauce and she told me, it is not nice to eat without mixing them together but she still complied with my request. Actually I find the dish quite nice to eat this way. Costs MYR8.

  1. Oh? In Hokkien, it's jiew hu eng chai. I like it served like this. One here, they pour the sauce over everything in the plate and sprinkle crushed peanut all over - Kuching style, catching on here now.

  2. I've eaten once only, don't really like it but others say it's nice.. With peanut sauce and some red sauce too, like tomato sauce..

  3. STP already gave you the Hokkien version. I love jiww hu eng chai with lots of peanuts on top of the paste. Usually in Kuching they make and serve everything in a plate to you. Not separately and you have to do yourself.

  4. in mandarin it's called "you yu" and "kong xin cai", in teochew it's called "jiew huer eng cai", hehehe!!

    i guess it's not because it taste better with the sauce mixed, but the boss is not used to serve the sauce and peanuts separately - rather out of her comfort zone and she gotta spare two extra foam cups to put the sauce and peanuts separately..

    1. If I knew she was going to use two foam cups I would have requested for the sauce and peanuts to be put on the same plate but separated from the vege and squid.

  5. You try making that kind of request here in Penang, they will either totally disregard this request or tell you to f*** off for not wanting to taste the authentic thing. Most of them anyway.

  6. There aren't many things I don't eat but this is definitely one of it (though I love kangkung). First of all, I don't like the sweet sticky sauce and secondly, I hate the chewy cuttlefish (I thought they refer to this as cuttlefish and not squid?) Some nasi lemak stalls use this type of cuttlefish to make their sotong sambal and I'll stay far away from it :(

    1. Unless I see the uncooked full versions, I can't tell whether they are squid or cuttlefish just by looking at the pieces. This you yu is not chewy at all surprisingly.

  7. In Ipoh the sauce is more like the satay peanut sauce. Usually it is served with the sauce poured over the yau yu and ong choy. I enjoyed the ong choy more than the yau yu...lol

    1. Me too. I like the ong choy more than the yau yu. The sauce I would say is sweeter than satay peanut sauce.

  8. I love kankung sotong! Can't remember when was the last time I had that. I guess you wanted to be able to control the amount of sauce that goes into the dish. Too much sauce spoils it.
