Garoupa Fish

After reading this post entitled "Millenium Eighty-Six @ Paramount Garden" on "Eat what, Eat Where?", I wanted to try the garoupa (sek pan) fish dishes as I like to eat fish. Last Sunday, at about 9.30am I reached the shop to see almost no customers in it. I must be too early but luckily the fish stall has started business for the day so I placed my order.

Garoupa slices mee hoon - MYR7.50 - instead of slices, there were 4 chunks of garoupa meat with mee hoon in clear soup which I like.

Steamed Garoupa Slices - MYR14 - as can be seen in the photo above, there were about 7 chunks of garoupa fish meat. My expectation of this dish must be too high because I was disappointed when I could not detect any rice wine in it but when I tried harder, I could detect a very faint aroma of rice wine. Perhaps they were running out of the wine so were using it sparingly on this day only.

  1. My dad has his own bottle of rice wine at his favorite steamed fish place. I think most steamed fish place do this, let regular customers buy their own wine and keep there for future use.

  7. good to be early and i guess this time you were lucky as they already start selling.. so you were the first customer?? hmmm, usually they will give bigger portion and cook nicer for the first customers?? hahahaha.. i would love fish in chunks and with no bones, the reason i don't fancy most of the fish are because of the bones which i find so inconvenient, lazy me!! hahahaha~~

    1. Then you will like to eat big ma yau fish because the bones are bigger and easier to remove. I think maybe some customers ate and left already - those real early birds.

  8. Glad you tried it...hope you weren't too disappointed. Let me clarify on the rice wine...I like mine subtle (coz I don't drink any liquor) but I do know of people liking it more intense (even so, this dish won't be as intense as rice wine chicken).

My guess as to why you only detected a very faint aroma of rice wine is probably because you asked for garoupa fish slices and, being as fresh as they were, you need to tone down on the rice wine so that the taste of wine does not drown the delicate garoupa slices. I had the fish head version (which was not as delicate), so probably needed more rice wine (and ginger), in my opinion.

    1. Here no queue but if many people you will need to sit and wait at your table for the food.

    1. Sweet and sour style means the garoupa is deep fried lah, right?

    1. I have never ordered here before so don't know how much they put so don't dare to ask in case what if it is already a lot in the first place.
