The Taste

From the comments in reply to my question in this post, Dark Knight wins but I took the red one after consulting my family.
Crimson Opera - "Beetroot with a heart of cheese and creamy white chocolate" - Retail price is MYR18.90 but I got it for free after buying 4 other moon cakes from the same vendor.

Cross section - the white creamy part is the cheese, the yellow part is the white chocolate, the brown part is the lotus paste with beetroot fillings.

I have eaten beetroot before but could not remember the taste so I could not comment on whether there is any beetroot taste in this moon cake or not. The fillings - lotus paste with beetroot - tastes not that sweet, I feel that it could pass off as red bean paste without any strong red bean taste. The red snowskin has a special taste to it that I could not identify but since the skin is thin and once a piece of this mooncake is eaten as a whole, this special taste does not stand out.

My mother ate a piece and thought that the yellow and white center was salted egg yolk because the cheese was salty although the white chocolate (yellow part) was sweet. My brother said that the moon cake tastes like sweets. I think it is because of the white chocolate center that makes it tastes like sweets.

Overall the taste is acceptable to me.

  3. Ya....I picked that! Beetroot is good. In NZ, they put that in burgers, salads, everything! It's rhubarb that I did not quite like. I had that there too.

    1. I made rhubarb jam once in uk when my co worker gave me some rhubarbs from his garden. Taste quite ok.

  4. The top side of the skin looked rather crude. It is as if they never use the mold with words and just hand made this mooncake. Well if it tastes like red bean paste then I can take that :)

    2. I don't think hand made because that would be too time consuming.

  5. Good thing that you and your family find the taste acceptable. I tend to stay away from cheese because some of them are too strong for my liking.

  12. What a cute and pretty mooncake in pinky red colour. This year I didn't eat much after overeating indulgence last year when my wife made so many moon cakes to give away. The cost is so unbelievably low! Less than RM3.00 for single yolk lotus paste without preservatives which tastes & smells better. I think mamarazzi got blog about trying our moon cakes.
