Jungle Within

Merchant's Lane is located on floor 1 of an old shop house unit in the same row as the Cho Cha Foodstore. Just look for this door.

Push the door and you will see a flight of steps.

Can you see the door in the middle?

Go through it to an open seating area with nature nearby.

Roots of plants.

Feels like dining in the wild when seated in this open area.

Kai Fan meaning Chicken Rice in Cantonese - MYR22+ (6% GST - MYR23.30 nett). The rice is hidden underneath the sunny side up egg. The deep fried chicken berempah (spices) is quite tasty.

I ordered the beef stew - MYR23+ (MYR24.40 nett). The beef stew tastes like the fillings of a beef pie. There are many pieces of tender beef in this stew but I find that there is too much gravy. Good that vegetables are provided in this dish.

There is no rice underneath the beef stew. Instead we get mashed potatoes. I believe serving rice with this dish would be more suitable. The taste is acceptable.

Price for 2 pax is MYR47.70

Time to say goodbye and walk down the steps.

  1. Oooh, the egg is beautifully done. I love it.

I guess we are used to having our meal with rice that is why we prefer to have the beef stew with rice instead of mash potato.

    1. if the beef stew is served separately with less gravy then it would go well with mash potatoes.

  2. Must have felt different dining in this type of "jungle cafe", what other food they serve? I also prefer rice than mash potatoe

  3. That kai fan was actually, ayam penyet, wasn't it?

We had a very nice place with built around some old trees, but they got rid all of them now - termites. Too bad, it was very well done, won many national architectural awards.

  8. Waaah! This place is really homely and nice like typical houses of my old friends. All messy with overgrown roots crawling inside. I am now curious and would drop by someday. Bookmarked!
