That one day has finally arrived where the two of us ate at this eatery serving Vietnamese Food since the last time we browsed its menu in mid Nov 2015. The sad thing is that the food item that we wanted to try which is Banh It Ram is no longer available. The waiter says it is because it is difficult to get the ingredients to make it but I suspect it is because it takes longer to prepare and not many people would want to pay MYR9.90++ for just two deep fried sticky rice dumplings.

When Baby Sumo reviewed this eatery back in Dec 2015, she took very clear photos of this Banh It Ram and I was so keen then to try it. Should have just gone and tried it then after reading it but it is too late now. I wonder which other eatery serves this Banh It Ram which is a white sticky mochi ball filled with pork, mung bean and shrimp that sits on top of another layer of deep fried sticky mochi that is crispy outside but soft and chewy inside. Doesn't that sound so very tasty? I even looked up the recipe for Banh It Ram should anyone here wants to try to make them.

Since Banh It Tram is no longer available, we settled for one set meal of grilled Vietnamese pork chop with rice with 3 small bites of the day that turned out to be a very small bowl of clam soup, salad and a tiny spring roll for MYR21.90++ which comes up to about MYR25.50 nett after adding 6% GST and 10% service charge.

When we were asked, we chose the largest portion of rice which weighs 200 grams since we were confident that we could finish eating 200 grams of rice which we did. The price stays the same for all the portion sizes of rice.

The grilled pork chop is tasty due to the lemon grass taste but we would prefer it to be less salty and the pork chop to be more juicy. Since the portion of the small bites is so tiny, I think next time we would just order this pork chop rice from the ala carte menu at MYR16.90++ (MYR19.70 nett). The photo for this pork chop rice in the ala carte menu does not show the sunny side up egg so maybe the egg is not included but we will ask the waiter before ordering it if ever there is a next time.

Another look at the set meal from another angle to emphasise the tiny portion of the 3 small bites of the day that costs MYR5++ (MYR5.85 nett). The set meal does not include a drink.

We ordered one fresh spring roll from the ala carte menu at MYR8.90++ which is about MYR10.40 nett.

All the ingredients inside the spring roll are raw except for the vermicelli and prawn. Quite refreshing to eat raw vegetables rolled inside a sheet of translucent rice paper. 

Since drinks are not provided in the set meals, we ordered hot drip coffee from the ala carte menu at MYR7.90++ which is about MYR9.20 nett. This Vietnamese coffee is very strong and bitter so for those who can't stand bitter coffee, a small cup of condensed milk is supplied for you to add it to the coffee.

There are 5 items on the set meal menu for you to choose.

And we chose this set - grilled vietnamese pork chop with rice.

If I am eating alone, I would have selected the 120g portion of rice since I always ask for half portion of rice whenever I eat alone but for noodles, I think I should be able to handle 160g. More eateries should follow this example of requesting customers not to waste food and only choose the portion of rice or noodles that suits their appetites.

Total bill is MYR45.10 for 2 pax. Since both of us finished all our food, MYR0.10 is donated to KOTO from our bill by this eatery.

An Viet is located on the lowest ground floor of the Gardens mall next to Village Roast Duck.

    1. Go to any Vietnamese restaurants in Singapore. I am sure they have this spring roll.

  2. I love Vietnamese rolls, used to make our own, but not my girl - she says the skin as a smell that puts her off - would go for the regular popiah skin so she's ok with their fried spring rolls.

    No Vietnamese place here - had one a long time ago...and then there was a stall run by a Vietnamese lady, probably married to someone here - both did not last very long. Maybe if they try now, they may do well. People are more adventurous these days - will go for all these exotic cuisines. Only Vietnamese place I've been to was a stall...in Subang, was ok...

    1. There are many different qualities of the skin so maybe that one that she ate was of a not so good quality.

      With people travelling more now, I think you are right that a Vietnamese place could do well in Sibu now. I've left a comment in your link above.

  3. Vietnamese roll is good and healthy. But not many people would enjoy it because of the herbs they add in the roll.

    Your pork chop looked juice and good.

  4. The bahn it ram, if reading the description, is probably exactly my type of food. But when I clicked into the links and saw the picture, I don't think the filling is only pork, mung bean and shrimp. There seems to be some shreds of other things. Hmm...

  8. I've had Vietnamese coffee only once...the taste is not for me. And I like the fried Vietnamese spring rolls more than the fresh ones :)
