When words spread

We pass by this old coffee shop that serves tasty char siew (BBQ pork) rice daily but we seldom eat there because there is always a crowd in the eatery even before the foodie reviews started back in 2007. If you are interested to look at tantalising caramelised char siew photos and to get more information about this place you may refer to this review in 2008 as the shop still looks the same.

Last Saturday, at about 2 pm, we were very hungry when we were passing this place so we stopped by for lunch. After a short wait, we were served with two messy plates of meat and rice which we gobbled down hungrily and then continued on our way home with a satisfied tummy.

My plate of char siew rice (small portion) - MYR6 nett.  I am very fearful of those melt-in-your-mouth "half fat half meat" (pun fei sau) pork belly char siew so I always request for lean meat which is nice and firm.

My spouse's plate of poached chicken and lean char siew meat - MYR7.50 nett. Taste as good as before.

  1. no wonder the plate of char siu and chicken looks so familiar..i hav been here a few times with my colleagues. All of us would usually ordered the poached chicken with char siu coz it seems like a good combination, the sweet & juicy caramel char siu melts together with the chicken fats and succulent meat! that kinda combination only works in this place..LOL! I tried the similar combination in other places but it just doesn't click together. Parking is hard, we usually double park during lunchtime.

  2. My! My! They sure are messy!!! But it's ok, as long as it all tastes good. The char siew and the chicken sure look really very good...and even the chili dip too. I would love to come here!

  3. Haha. Look like they just throw everything into the plate and pour the sauce all over. Never mind, messy but taste nice is more important.

I wouldnt mind some fat in the char siew. But not too fat. Too lean, it could be tough sometime.

  4. I thought the place is Meng Kee.. If you say the best char-siew, I terus think of Meng Kee in Glenmarie.. The 2nd plate looks sloppy, but nevermind la, as long as sedap, I don't mind, hehe..

    1. Now Meng Kee has outlets nearby at happy garden and kuchai lama but their prices are more expensive and I find their char siew not as caramelized as this one here.

    1. Of course you can. Just eat with someone who will order the chicken.

    1. No fatty bits so shouldn't be sinful. :)

  7. They must have been in a real hurry....I think they should strive to present it better...even if it's coffee shop food! ;)

    1. Of course they are in a hurry, they still have too many hungry customers queuing and waiting to be served.

I am annoyed that you are fearful of the good stuff, so to speak :/ ...

    1. You should be happy that I leave the good stuff for people who likes them like you do.

    1. Yes no need to specially come here because they got more business than they can handle daily.

  10. Thought it was Meng Kee too. I waver between having it lean (too lean not nice) and half-fat (caramelised fat is da bomb! But only if done well)

    1. The lean meat here has pieces of caramelised fats sticking to them at the sides, not in between the meat like those half fat half meat pork belly pieces (Pun Fei Sau) so it is ok for you to eat the lean meat here I would think but this place is too far from your usual eating places.

  11. I think I came here before ...only once when we were running very late and I remembered the food was quite good. Now time to make another visit. I always ask for "fei tit" char siew whenever I go for one.

    1. Seems like it is quite well known for an old shop since you and NuxV have both been here. :)

  13. I wanted to laugh at the mess! I didn't realise it was messy until you said so. I also prefer all lean meat although I do eat crispy pork belly often.

  14. I know what you mean. The fatty char siew looks like a good idea and you'll want it when you order if you're hungry. However, after eating a few pieces of it, you'll become jelak and wish you ordered lean char siew instead. Haha. At least that's what always happens to me. The fatty char siew is nice but can't eat too much of it.

  15. I like my char siew to have some fats and I like that chicken too

    1. The lean ones do have some fats sticking to the side and are easily removed by me unlike those pork belly of layering fats which are difficult to remove.
