2 5 5 2

We were having dim sum when the dish below was brought to our table and we were like, no, no, we did not order this but the waiter took a look at our order chit and said, yes, this item is on your order. We were very surprised so we checked our order chit against the menu and discovered that we have written the number 5 when it should be 2. We filled in the order chit ourselves so the mistake was ours and ours alone.

5 and 2 are often mixed up because we have received letters for house no 2 that the sender erroneously wrote as house no 5 and then we also get letters for house no 5 on street no 5 that the sender mistakenly wrote as street no 2. Have you encountered a mix up of 5 and 2 or 2 and 5 before? They don't even look alike so I wonder why this mix up often happens. It is just between the number 2 and 5 when written in Arabic numbers. The mix up does not happen with other numbers. I am referring to the mix up in written form, not spoken form.

This item was delivered to our table and as far as we were aware, we did not order it.

We wanted to order this Steamed Luffa Siew Mai, item A02

but we wrote A05 on the order chit so this item Steamed Thai Style Beancurd was delivered to our table. Since it was our mistake, we just ate it and as we ordered enough food, we did not place another order for A02 so till next time, A02.

  3. It happened to me before.. I wrote R2 in the order chit, but it's not what I wanted, but I really wrote R2 on the paper, hated myself so much!

  4. Er.. I have never mistakenly write 5 when I really wanted to write 2 before lah... But I did have instances where my eyes deceived me when reading the menu. I wanted item 2, but somehow I saw it as item 5, so I write 5.

    1. What about vice versa? As in you mistakenly wrote 2 when you wanted to write 5. So your brain can read 2 as 5, can it read 5 as 2?

    2. Actually is not just 2 and 5 or 5 as 2. It could be any combi. It's not even a combination thing. Sometimes I guess if they put item 3 and 4 side by side, then I might see 3 but write 4...

    3. Are you sure? Have you ever written any number mix up apart from 5 and 2? From Real life examples.

  7. I have made typo errors with 2 and 5 because they are close together on the keyboard.

    1. But 2 and 3 is closer so instead of typing 2 you would type 3 instead of 5, right?

  9. We just had a similar error while dining at Black Canyon recently. My wife filled their chit which had very tiny prints and tick-boxes for quantity. She wrote the number 1 too long for quantity space. The waiter ended up serving 2 bowls of spicy hot Tom Yam soup of different flavours. They showed us our writing error but should have checked with us before hand. I had to drink and tapao the 2 bowls. I had diarrhea for next 2 days as my tummy was on fire.

  10. Nope never encountered this kinda mix-up before. :)

Oh well, at least it wasn't something weird or expensive.

  11. Mistake tends to happen. At least, you didn't mind the mix-up of orders. Good that you like all the food that served. A05 is RM0.40 cheaper than A02 some more. hehehe!

    1. Now that almost everyone says that they prefer A05, I am also having second thoughts about whether to order A02 next time or not.

  13. So far as I can remember, have not happened before and I hope it will not happen. From the photos, I too prefer A05.

  14. It happens to us all the time, that's why people made typo errors, and also when speaking, sometimes we want to say certain words, but end up come out from our mouth different words, haha

    1. Typo errors are done when we are not careful enough. The thing about 2 and 5 is like RG says our eyes see 2 but our brains translate it as 5 because of their shapes. This is different from typos.

  15. This happened to me too. Haha!

We were in Ipoh eating with my dear's parents when two bowls of noodle soup came up. I said I didn't order that, I ordered the dry one. Was very insistent and the poor guy was quite confused and said but you wrote it as soup noodles. I checked the order chit, and sure enough I DID tick the noodle soup instead of the dry ones. Oh well.

    1. Yes, it is mind boggling why these mistakes were made when in our mind we clearly knew what we wanted. :|
