CNY day 1

This is a vegetarian dish that we eat every year during CNY day 1. The main ingredients are chinese cabbage (wong nga pak in cantonese), mushroom, and bean curd sheets. Do you eat a similar vegetarian dish during CNY?

My friend knows that I enjoy looking at different designs of ang pow so she showed me these very colourful ang pow packets. I believe the drawings correspond to the chinese words of wishes and greetings on the ang pows. I should have taken close-up photographs showing the words.

  1. Yes. I used to eat this when I celebrated first day of CNY at my mom's. Nowadays I can only go back on the second day hence I do not get to eat this anymore unless my mom cooks it on ordinary days.

  2. I did see a lot of people on Facebook going vegetarian on Day 1 CNY - I'm not familiar with the practice. I guess that is why there is hardly any vegetarian food shops or stalls here.

  10. Vegetarian meals are hard to find in commercial places so it's good to have foods like this available.

  11. I know this dish but we don't just eat it on CNY... Everything is soft so it's actually very suitable for small children and elderly, right? :p
