Dried fish fillet snacks?

While shopping for CNY goods, my husband pointed out this special CNY snack to me. Special because it is only sold near Chinese New Year and I don't know what it is made of.

The label says "Seaweed Cuttlefish Crispy" but in the list of ingredients, it just says "ikan" (Malay Language) which means fish.

Here's a closer look. So is it cuttlefish or fish? If it is fish, could it be the dried fish fillet snacks? I wanted to buy and eat it so that I could know what it is but I could not find the price label so I scanned the price code at a price machine.

For 200g, the price is MYR16.88 but if it is the dried fish fillet snacks which are very tedious to make and takes a lot of effort to make it, this price should be worth it, right?

  1. You also shopping for CNY snacks? Did you get pineapple tarts which is your favourite?

    1. I have not seen the deep fried crab stick snack being sold this year.

  3. This looks like a spin-off the snack made of fish fillet strips. Take the snack, fold it up, tie and deep-fry. But this one has thicker strips and that seaweed in the middle.

Worth it if nice to eat heh.

    1. Never eaten this particular brand so I don't know whether it is nice to eat or not even though this snack is very tasty.

  4. Yes, these ones resemble those dried fish fillet snacks. Although they're called fish snacks, when I eat it it actually tastes like cuttlefish to me. So, I think they use the words 'fish' and 'cuttlefish' interchangeably.

From the pic, the can is not tall so I'd say it's a small can, so RM16.88 is quite expensive (but still cheaper than the ones I saw at RM18 - 25) compared to making it yourself coz when I made it, 1 pack at RM5.88 yielded 2 tall cans but then it also comes with a lot of work (hmm, maybe tying them with seaweed is easier). I doubt that can is 200g (even including the weight of the plastic can) coz these snacks are really light, 1 whole unfried pack only weighs 120g.

    1. I salute you for having the patience to painstakingly fold each bunch to make this. I am too lazy so have to do without since I don't want to pay so much for something that will disappear down my throat in a blink.

  5. I've not seen this one. Looks like the one that Kris made except that it's tied with seaweed. I think it is pricey due to the labor cost. This snack is very time consuming to make, just like ngaku.

    1. Will you be making this one as well since you made the ngaku snack?

  6. This looks like a new CNY snack to me. Every year the sellers get innovative to roll out new items! I would love this fish fillet for sure.

    1. Since you are not celebrating CNY this year, will you be eating CNY snacks?

  7. Did you try? Me first time seeing this too. Then again, I like all those 'busuk' snacks!

  8. Over here in Ipoh, one lady is selling this without the seaweed for RM17.. so I guess the price is almost the same...

    1. Thanks for letting me know the price for this in Ipoh. Guess this is the standard CNY price for CNY snacks.

  9. Haven't seen these - the very popular one would be the one that looks like shredded paper. LOL!!!

    2. I don't think so. We even bake our cashews and peanuts in the oven, not so oily.

  11. Hi Mun, the price is more or less the same as in Ipoh. It is very time consuming so I guess that is why it is expensive.

  12. Yala, this is the one that ewew made the other day. I'm surprised it is not more expensive compared to other types of CNY pastries. I thought this one is very hard to make...

    1. Are you going to make some since you have your little oven? You can bake them instead of deep fried. I find the price now expensive.

    2. Too late for that don't you think? But probably not even if it is not too late. I already scared after reading about how troublesome it is to tie them.

    3. It is never too late because you can make them in your mom's kitchen when you are back for CNY. Just use seaweed to wrap them so no need to tie.

  13. Interesting!

So was it fish or cuttlefish? It looks like the dried fish slices that they have during CNY, both in slices and in strips. I went to pasar pagi today and saw crab stick crackers!!!

First time I saw them too, it's deep fried. Should be good, can't wait to eat them.
