Banana Leaf Less Rice

On Saturday 23.nov.2024, went to midvalley mall.

*** Banana Bro Gardens Mall ***

After I walked around for a long long time looking at various eateries and don't feel like eating anything in them, he decided that we should go eat banana leaf rice.

12.28 noon - I ordered the single pax craving set MYR 13.90++ with unlimited refills of the rice, cabbage, cucumber and deep fried item. I only took one scoop of rice without any curry gravy and two helpings of the cool cucumbers. I also ordered one portion of mutton varuval MYR 19.90++ which he didn't eat at all.

He ordered 1 pax combo MYR 16.90++ which consists of 1 craving set, 1 drink which he upgraded to the tarik lawa hot by paying an extra MYR 0.99++ and he chose chicken 65 add-on by topping up MYR 5.90++

12.28 noon - two crispy papadams each.

12.35 noon - left: chicken 65
Right: mutton varuval MYR 19.90++ which is tender enough but my teeth are too weak so there are some pieces of mutton which I just swallowed without chewing them thoroughly. The taste of the mutton varuval is nice. 😋

Morning 44.70
Next morning 44.55
Went down a bit.

1.43 pm - total MYR 66.80 nett.

Ate Too Much

On Tuesday 23.may.2023, went to do an errand in Sri Petaling so parked the car near RT Pastry bakery. Wanted to eat brunch at Sunny Republic eatery but it is their off day. Next choice was Yitcha Kaw kaw eatery but it is also their off day. Ended up crossing the road to eat brunch at bananabro Sri Petaling. Before that, I went to do the errand and he walked to 126 mixed rice Sri Petaling to buy takeaway lunch for the Elderlies.

11.04 am - two craving sets at MYR 10.90++ each since it is not allowed for two persons to share one craving set so we have to order one each as there are no better alternatives. I upgraded my craving set to change to briyani rice which includes one hard boiled egg by adding MYR 4.90++ so I ate one full bowl of briyani rice for my omad on this day and ended up feeling like my tummy is about to burst.

He ordered iced ginger tea MYR 5.90++ and I ordered iced Nescafe MYR 5.90++ because in hot weather, we need to drink more liquid.

11.07 am - I ordered deep fried boneless chicken cubes MYR 8.90++ and he ordered deep fried squid rings MYR 11.90++ and both dishes are too much for us so he took the remaining home in his chapfan dinner container.

Total price is MYR 68.80 nett.

4.55 pm - his chapfan dinner from 126 mixed rice Sri Petaling with the remaining chicken and squid from bananabro.

Day 12 showing in selected cinemas. Emotional.

Pedas Banana Leaf Curry Kitchen

On Friday 18.feb.22, he wanted to eat banana leaf rice and suggested banana bro but I found another eatery on Foodpanda and ordered from that eatery because the delivery fees are lower. Turns out to be very nice.

11.02 am - all the food ordered. Many types of tasty curry gravy and sambal that we didn't eat and just discarded. Oh, I feel so guilty doing so but then we can't eat spicy gravy and spicy sauces.

11.48 am - Banana Leaf Rice with curry mackerel aka tenggiri. Tasty and not too salty but must be careful not to eat those chili padi hidden in the vegetables.

The delivery fee is only about MYR 1 and there are two discounts so the today price is very good at MYR 20.59 only. The nasi lemak basmathi has very fragrant and light rice so we will definitely order it again.

He accidentally ate a chili padi and it was so spicy that he drank cold apple cider to get rid of the burning in his mouth. So our 3 cans of alcoholic drinks bought for CNY have been fully consumed.

Moorthys Mathai Brickfields

Since we were in the vicinity to pick up our order from Entier at Alila Bangsar, we also dropped by a coffee shop in Brickfields which is near Alila Bangsar on Wed 26.may.21 to buy banana leaf rice and pork noodles.

12.47 noon - His lunch of fish banana leaf rice bought from Moorthy's Mathai stall at Money's Corner Food Court. He chose pineapple cucumber and cabbage as the two side dishes and for gravy, he chose fish curry. He couldn't finish it so I have to help with a few tablespoonfuls of the side dishes and a quarter of the fish.

I also ordered Mutton curry and fish cutlet but was given a fried ball that looks like a begedil. These two items I gave to my friend.

My friend sent me this photo of the fried ball after it has been cut to show the insides. The ball is made of fish and potatoes.

I googled and found this recipe of fish cutlets. So fish cutlets are deep fried balls made of fish, potatoes, shallots and eggs. I didn't know this when I selected 1 fish cutlet using a food delivery app with the self pickup option.

Our order - fried fish banana leaf rice at MYR 14 Nett, fish cutlet at MYR 4 nett and mutton curry at MYR 12 nett. Total is MYR 30 nett.

This is the Money's Corner Food Court, Brickfields with very few people around at 11.48 am. This food court is also known as Mayflower coffee shop.

We also ordered Peter's pork noodle MYR 7.50 nett which is another popular stall in the same coffee shop. He ate this pork yee mee for dinner at 7 pm. I was full from eating Entire main dish so I didn't eat this pork yee mee at all.

BananaBro Sri Petaling

I have been waiting for a banana leaf rice specialist to open business in Sri Petaling so when I read that there is one now, I quickly went there for lunch on a Sunday at noon only to find that all the seats were fully occupied so I ordered takeaway to eat at home. The banana leaf set (MYR 7.90 nett) consists of rice, 3 vegetables dishes, papadum and curry gravy (not shown in the above photo). That piece of mackerel fish costs MYR 8.50 nett and is acceptable though not as tasty as the one here. Overall, a nice meal so I will be back for lunch (dine-in).

The Mutton Masala tastes good too. Total price for 2 pax: MYR 34.20 nett. Average per pax: MYR 17.10 nett because we bought mutton and fish.

WG Kanna Curry House

Kanna Curry House is well known for its banana leaf rice and even though I have had my fair share of banana leaf rice, I have not been to this eatery so here I am.

Basic banana leaf rice with refillable 3 types of vegetable side dishes (cabbage, curried radish, cucumber with raw onions) with 5 types of curry gravy and rice costs MYR 6.60+ (6% SST per pax = about MYR 7). A tasty and fresh piece of deep fried tenggiri fish is MYR 6.20+ (MYR 6.60 nett). The small plate of prawns in curry gravy to be shared by 4 of us costs MYR 13.80+ (MYR 14.63 nett) so it is about MYR 3.66 nett per person.

Three types of curry gravy for unlimited usage: dal (mung bean) curry, fish curry, chicken curry. There are another two types of curry gravy: crabs curry and vegetable curry.

My portion: A few pieces of poppadom, 1 piece of deep fried tenggiri (mackerel) fish, 3 small prawns, banana leaf rice (small portion), default 3 vegetables dishes with a bit of each 5 types of curry gravy. A satisfying meal despite the curried radish being too salty (MYR 17.25 nett). I did not order a drink because I know I would be too full to eat and drink at one sitting.

Total bill for 4 pax: MYR 75.25 nett. On average about MYR 18.80 per pax because my 3 friends ordered a Teh O Limau (Lime Tea) drink MYR 2.10 nett each.

Kanna Curry House at PJ.

Drinks Menu with prices inclusive of 6% SST.

Food Menu with prices inclusive of 6% SST. The words that are not clear are "Thosai Ghee / Paper" and the price for Thosai Rawa is MYR 2.60 nett. Vadai / Karipap / Pisang Goreng is MYR 1 nett per item.

Food Menu with prices inclusive of 6% SST. I will be back to eat their fresh deep fried mackerel fish (tenggiri fish) at MYR 6.60 nett per piece.

Missing out

This is a famous banana leaf rice place that I did not know about so my friends took me there for lunch one day. True enough, it was very tasty with very crispy deep fried squid which is a must-order. We shared the meat dishes such as curry mutton, deep fried fish and chicken. I tried the crab rasam and just find it spicy though my friend said it tastes like tom yum to her. For 7 of us, the bill is MYR153 inclusive of drinks which means about MYR22 each.

This eatery is located in a detached house in PJ.

Upon entering the house, you will see the area where all the deep frying takes place. After entering the small entrance in the photo above, you will see the following area in the photo below:

More counter tops.

The cabinet with the cooked dishes is opposite the counter tops. From this area, we enter the door on our left to the rooms which have been converted into air-conditioned dining areas.

Sri Ganapathi Mess is the name of this place.

New Outlet

Banana Leaf Rice paid by friends so I do not know how much it costs. My friends all ate Banana Leaf Roti Canai because this place is famous for their crispy roti canai.

This is Raju's Banana Leaf New Branch at 383 Jalan 5/59, Petaling Garden, PJ. I have never been to their original place but I was told it is a very popular eatery. They also sell vadai at MYR1 nett each which is very tasty.

Veloo Villas at D'Piazza

After our walk in Penang's National Park, we were very hungry and we tried to stop in town to have a meal but traffic was bad and many car parks that we passed by were full so we went back to the Bayan Baru area and had our lunch at Veloo Villas restaurant.

We ordered 3 banana leaf meals at MYR5 each and one small plate of mutton curry (MYR 5) as can be seen in the photo above.

2 Idli at MYR1 each

Veloo Villas at D'Piazza serves authentic banana leaf meals. My friend recommended this restaurant to us.

Total price for 3 pax: MYR32.20 that includes 3 sets of banana leaf meals at MYR5 each, one plate of mutton curry at MYR5, 2 glasses of plain lassi (one sweet, one without sugar and without salt) at MYR3.5 each, two Idli at MYR1 each, and one plain thosai at MYR1.40 plus 6% GST.

Krishna Curry House

Back to food in the Klang Valley. Finally I went to try Phong Hong's favourite banana leaf rice and briyani rice.

These were the vegetables and condiments for the banana leaf rice that day we were there. We chose plain white rice instead of briyani rice for the banana leaf rice. No service charge, only 6% GST is applied to the price. Banana leaf rice costs MYR6.50 + 6% GST = MYR6.90 per person.

We also ordered the chicken briyani (MYR14+ = MYR14.50), squid (MYR6+ = MYR6.35) and the famous mutton curry in claypot (MYR12+ = MYR12.75).

This piece of fish costs MYR7+ (MYR7.40) with the same pot of chicken briyani rice for size comparison.

This is so unique - an order chit with pictures. We ordered a mango lassi (MYR4.50+ = MYR4.80) and a cup of coffee (MYR1.50+ = MYR1.60).

Extra charge (MYR5) for sharing but this notice is put behind the payment counter so it is not that visible. I guess the person taking the order will inform the customers about this when necessary unless this "ruling" is not enforced.

This is the famous place. I read from some other blogs that the food here used to be much nicer but I wouldn't know since I have not been here before. It was a satisfying meal but since the location is quite far from where I stay, I don't think I will visit here again. I would rather go to other banana leaf rice eateries nearer to my place. My friend said that she prefers the banana leaf rice at Restaurant Curry Leaf, Damansara Uptown because the spices taste in their curries are more pronounced than this place.

Total bill came up to MYR61.50 which I consider to be not very expensive. They put fresh coconut instead of mango lassi on the bill due to both having the same price.
