Swee Hing Nasi Lemak

Nasi Lemak (Coconut milk rice) bought from a stall in Swee Hing coffee shop, Sri Petaling with acar (pickled vegetables) and curry chicken - at about MYR7.

Nasi Lemak from the same stall but with curry potatoes only - at about MYR6.50 and is quite tasty.

I asked for no sambal, no gravy, no sauce with the usual hard boiled egg (half), two slices of cucumber, peanuts, deep fried anchovies and a small portion of coconut milk rice which is so rich until I prefer it to be less so. Very "lemak" taste. Add ons are curry potatoes, pickled vegetables (acar) and stink bean (petai) onion sambal. Price is MYR8 nett. Since the portion of rice is small, I kept half of the stink bean, acar, peanuts and anchovies for dinner to be eaten with congee.

Sour Soup Vermicelli

We brought some friends to try out Pho Vietz at Sri Petaling and this time I ordered the Sour Soup Vermicelli which has 3 prawns in it and it is more spicy than sour (MYR22.90+ which is MYR25.20 nett).

We also ordered the 3 layered drink and a pot of Atiso (Artichoke) Tea at MYR7.90+ (MYR8.70 nett) each. The Atiso Tea has a nice fragrance. Our friends agreed that the 3 layered drink is like drinking undiluted coconut milk, it is that thick so we have to wait for the ice cubes to melt for the drink to be diluted.

With Beef Pho and Pork Chop rice, the total bill is MYR104.95 nett for 4 pax.

Beef Stew at Pho Vietz

Beef stew with Rice set - MYR17.90 +10% service charge (MYR19.70 nett). The portion of beef stew is enough for two average eaters. The beef stew is very tasty, very slightly spicy. This set is value for money because apart from the beef stew, it includes a bowl of rice, a bowl of appetising soup and a bowl of sweet and sour salad.

Beef Noodle Soup at the same price as the beef stew set.

Interior - Colourful mural. This branch of Pho Vietz at Sri Petaling is decorated with care to the details.

Total amount is MYR48.05 nett. This is our 3rd visit to this eatery. Due to its tasty food, we will visit it more often.

Small White Rabbit

Recently we were surprised to see that the Grand Shanghai Banquet restaurant at Sri Petaling which I have been to only once has been replaced with another restaurant.

What do you think of the name of this new restaurant?

Rice Cake

Pork chop rice - MYR16.90+ (MYR18.60 nett)

Vietnamese rice cup cake at MYR7.90+ (MYR8.70 nett) for two rice cakes topped with deep fried lard, spring onions, crushed peanuts and some other items.

Vietnamese Prawns Salad - MYR15.80+ (MYR17.40 nett) - very appetising because it is sweet and a bit sourish. Vietnamese Iced Coffee - MYR7.90+ (MYR8.70 nett).

At Pho Vietz, Sri Petaling a few months ago (MYR53.35 nett for 2pax).

Not long enough

Back in April this year (2016), I thought that it would be a very, very long time before we eat at House of Fishball, Sri Petaling again but I was wrong. On early morning, we had some errands to run nearby so we ate at this eatery again as it was the closest eatery around that was opened at that time.

I ordered a plate of stir fried chee cheong fun (MYR7 nett) and it was too oily for my liking. The bowl of hot barley bean curd sheets ginkgo (MYR3.50 nett) was not that sweet so it was fine for me. Guess we will only be back here if we have no other choices available to us.

Swee Hing Beef Noodle

Finally, an affordable bowl of delicious beef noodle (MYR8 nett) near my place. This is bought from a stall in Swee Hing coffee shop, Sri Petaling.

Never say never

We are back at Tea Garden, Sri Petaling. This time instead of beef rendang nasi lemak, we ordered the fried chicken nasi lemak (coconut milk rice) at MYR11.40 nett. The fried chicken tastes good but I prefer the beef rendang.

The previous time I ate this, I said I would not order it again because it is too spicy for me but when I look through the menu, I don't feel like eating anything else so I ordered it again (MYR7.90 nett) and it was not that spicy this time.

Instead of the red bean tong sui (sweet soup), we ordered the black glutinous rice tong sui at MYR5.80 nett which comes with Glutinous Rice Balls (5) filled with sesame. I still prefer the red bean tong sui because I like to eat red beans more than black glutinous rice. Total price: MYR25.10 nett for 2 pax.

Tea Garden as usual

Tea Garden at Sri Petaling is now one of our-go-to-eatery so we found ourselves there again ordering the food that we have ordered before as we are not that adventurous to try other dishes on the menu.

Beef Rendang Nasi Lemak (Coconut Milk Rice) - MYR13.40 nett. Unlike other nasi lemak, this one has acar (pickled vegetables) which is very appetising.

Nyonya Mee Siam at MYR7.90 nett. Still as tasty as before with a sourish broth of slightly creamy (coconut milk) curry. Somehow I felt that it was a little too hot spicy for me so I won't order this next time.

A bowl of Red Bean Sweet Soup (Tong Sui) with Glutinous Rice Balls (5) filled with sesame to share at MYR5.80 nett.

Lots of Red Beans - Yums!

Swee Hing

This is a popular old style coffee shop in Sri Petaling near New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice. It occupies two shop units and has fully occupied tables most of the time that we were there. The reason that it is so popular is because it used to be located in OUG and has loyal customers living in OUG patronising it so when it moved to its current location in Sri Petaling, its customers drive all the way from OUG to Sri Petaling just to eat here.

One of the stalls in this coffee shop sells Chinese style pastries such as this egg tart at MYR1.70 nett.
The taste is on par with the egg tarts from TK which is a bit more expensive.

Herbal Spring Village Chicken

We went to Tea Garden, Sri Petaling again for our meal. This time, we ordered the Baked Herbal Spring Kampung (Village) Chicken (half a chicken) with Rice at MYR17.20 nett to share between the two of us.

Closed up photo of the baked chicken. We could taste the herb - Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis) in this chicken dish. The chicken was infused with the taste of herbs so it was tasty.

We also ordered a bowl of Red Bean Sweet Soup (Tong Sui) with Glutinous Rice Balls (5) filled with sesame to share at MYR5.80 nett. It was only slightly sweet which I like.

Pat Kin Pat Sun at Sri Petaling

We intended to eat at Tea Garden Sri Petaling but we couldn't find a parking space nearby so in the end, we just ate at Pat Kin Pat Sun eatery at Sri Petaling which is nearer to our parked car. This Pat Kin Pat Sun eatery is located below Krathong Thai Sri Petaling and behind the Grand Shanghai Banquet Restaurant.

We order this dish - stirfried beancurd and roasted pork with rice - from the Aug promotion menu with 30% off its normal price (MYR14.60) so we only need to pay MYR10.20 nett.

The other dish we order is a bowl of Curry Noodle with Pork Skin at MYR6.50 nett from their special menu. Both dishes are acceptable, good enough to fill our stomachs.

New Roast Place

Curry Noodle with 3 types of roasted meat: char siew (BBQ pork), siew yuk (roast pork) and roast duck for MYR7 nett. Looks kind of messy. I did not eat this so I do not know how the taste is like.

Wanton noodle with Char Siew (BBQ pork) for MYR6.50 nett. Taste is acceptable.

A new eatery in Sri Petaling - Pakkopi Kaw that sells noodles and roast meat. This shop is located on the same row of shops as Tanjung Tua Lang Fish Head Restaurant

I won't want to visit this shop again because our order was taken by a well-dressed impatient elderly man with a grumpy and grouchy expression on his face. When we asked him questions, he answered us curtly with a scowl on his face. We suspect that he may be the owner or is related to the owner. You may visit this eatery if you are curious about this person. He seems to be one who always take the order from customers.

Mutton Curry

Instead of having nasi lemak with mutton rendang (MYR12.60 nett) at Tea Garden, Sri Petaling, I chose to have mutton curry rice instead at MYR12 nett. I try to avoid the top layer of oil in the curry and I did not eat much of the curry gravy but we finished eating the mutton and potatoes in the curry.

For small eaters, there is enough mutton for two persons. The mutton is tender with tendons but the texture of the potatoes are somewhat rubbery. I think it is better to stick to the nasi lemak with mutton if I want to eat mutton next time.

Free dessert

Tou Tou Little Kitchen (肥 陶丸粉专卖店), Sri Petaling is still having their free dessert promotion if you order a dish from their special promotion menu since 2 years ago.

Two of us ordered a bowl of sharkfin melon and pork ribs noodle soup (鱼翅瓜汤) to share - MYR13.80+ 6% GST (MYR14.65 nett). For our free dessert, there is a choice of red bean sweet soup or barley ginkgo
sweet soup and we select red bean sweet soup which is a bit too sweet for us but good as dessert to wrap up the meal.
As for the noodle, we could either have thin or thick hakka noodle and we chose the thin ones. A good enough savoury meal for two as we plan to eat cakes at another shop after this meal.

Chinese yam

Double boiled chicken soup with chinese yam and scallops. Chinese yam (Dioscorea polystachya) is called 淮山 or 怀山 (Huáishān) in Mandarin. My mother always boil soup using Chinese yam because it is said to be beneficial to health according to Chinese medicine.

The soup comes with a bowl of plain white rice and two small side dishes - braised peanuts and kimchi for MYR13.40 nett. Good enough for lunch or dinner. So if you go to Tea Garden eatery and don't feel like having nasi lemak you can opt for this soup set.

12 not 24

10 Portuguese egg tarts. The colour of this photo has too much red to it.

A big thank you to NuxV who wrote about this good deal. Since I have not eaten Portuguese egg tarts for a few years, I went for it. King's bakery is having this promotion from 3.30pm to 4.30pm daily - 10 Portuguese egg tarts for MYR12 nett. The price of one Portuguese egg tart is MYR2.40 so this promotion gives a 50% discount but you need to buy 10 tarts and so I did. I shared them with my siblings who took one to share among them because they are on diet so I had to eat one daily until they are all gone.

The layered puff pastry is thick and a bit salty without any buttery taste. The egg custard is not overly sweet, is thick and has a strong egg taste. My spouse says that the egg custard has a milky taste (which I couldn't detect) to it so he won't eat it as he can't stand that milky taste. Since I didn't want to eat so many tarts on my own over a few days, I requested him to eat the pastry (crust) and leave the custard to me which he did. I would have to say that the egg tarts taste good for this price.

I bought them at the King's Bakery outlet in Sri Petaling. I guess this promotion would be available at the other outlets too. I did not notice any end date to this promotion.

Tea or Poppo

Since we like the nasi lemak (coconut milk rice) at Tea Garden a lot, we had to go back to Poppo Kanteen to try their nasi lemak again to compare the taste to see which one we like better.

Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken - MYR8.90 nett. The portion of rice is quite small which is good for me as I am a small eater but this means there are too much sambal and curry sauce. The rice here has a slightly salty taste.

Nasi Lemak Beef Rendang MYR9.90 nett. Same case - too much sambal and beef rendang to match the small portion of rice. Next time, we will order one nasi lemak with a type of meat and then order just the plain rice for MYR1.80 nett to go with the sauce and sambal from the nasi lemak.

Verdict is I like the taste of Tea Garden's nasi lemak better but the price here is better due to the smaller rice portion.

There again

I like to eat the nasi lemak so much that we went back to Tea Garden the next day to try the Nasi Lemak Mutton Rendang (Coconut Milk Rice) at MYR12.60 nett. There are many pieces of tender mutton and lots of rice so we were very satisfied with this dish so we will definitely be back for it.

The Hainanese Milk Tea has a very strong milky taste to it. We had it with ice so the price is MYR4.30 nett.

We wanted to try the stir fried mee siam (dry) but it was not available so we settled for Nyonya Mee Siam at MYR7.90 nett and were pleasantly surprise at how tasty it was with a sourish broth of slightly creamy (coconut milk) curry. There are two prawns and one whole hard boiled egg to go with the rice vermicelli (mee hoon). I would definitely order this again.

A fulfilling meal at a total price of MYR24.80 for two persons.

Colours
This can be considered another post. After reading the post about colouring books on "Eat what, Eat where?" blog yesterday, I suddenly remember that I had been meaning to talk about this recent "colouring away your stress" activity for grown ups.

I came to know about this activity from Kuchingnite fb posts since her daughter is very good at drawing and colouring. Then I saw the expensive colouring books in the bookstores but unfortunately I did not have any spare cash to buy them since they are over MYR70 per book so I did the next best thing that I could do.

I dug out my two old boxes of (48 colours each) colour pencils for children from the store room and started using them since they are still in working condition after many years and here are the results. No need to pay anything and yet can take away my stress.

I just let it go and simply colour away on blank pieces of paper. If like me, you think those books are expensive and you would like to colour too, just do what I did. Go find your old colour pencils, get a piece of blank paper and just colour away. Anything goes and you may be surprised at the results.
