Meng Kee Char Siew

We noticed this new eatery in Happy Garden one evening so stopped by for early dinner at 4.30pm.

Char Siew Wanton noodle in soup MYR5.50 nett which is cheaper than the bowl of 5 dumplings (sui kao) MYR6 nett.

White coffee MYR3 nett and purple sweet potatoes sweet soup also the same price as the white coffee.

Bright and clean interior

They are supposed to be a branch of the famous Meng Kee Restaurant along Tengkat Tong Shin. I have only eaten there once a very, very, very long time ago. There is another branch in Kuchai Enterpreneur Park which I also have been there once a very, very long time ago.

Nett price

There is a banner which says "New opening". Those familiar with Happy Garden will recognise this row of old shophouses.

Opposite BBQ Chicken at One Utama

I always walk pass this eatery at One Utama without knowing the exact name until RG wrote a post about it. No, I still have not eaten at this place. I ate in the eatery opposite it which is...

... Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert because my friend wanted to eat there.

Char Siew Snowy Bun - MYR6.90++ for two in a serving (MYR8 after 10% service charge and 6% GST)

If you do not think Tim Ho Wan's Crispy BBQ Pork Buns are tasty, then you must try this to see the difference. Not for those who do not like sweet over powering buttery taste which is what the Snowy parts are all about.

Mango Glutinous Rice Roll - MYR5.90++ (MYR6.90). I think they could do without the mango sauce on top.

Not that sweet. Would be much better it the glutinous rice part is thinner and there is a bigger piece of mango inside.

Yolky Custart Pau - MYR5.90++ (MYR6.90) - two paus in a serving

The filling is a bit too sweet despite having a nice strong salted egg yoke taste. The pau skin is too thick and on the dry side.

This congee when served looks so plain.

It is Supreme Congee with Sliced Fish, Prawns and mock abalone slices - MYR17.90++ (MYR20.90 nett). More ingredients inside the conge than those served by i-Canton so this dish is worth the price above.

Tong Yuen Sesame Paste - MYR7.90+ (MYR9.20). My friend said that the sesame paste has been diluted and doesn't taste like sesame paste.

Dim Sum & Win Some! says the red crown on the wall.

Seems a popular place with many people eating the wanton noodles which we will try next time.

The place is...

...where I used to go for lunch at around 11 am during work days with my co-workers because they open early for breakfast and are ready for lunch at that time. We chose items from the set lunch menu because each set includes drinks too and that makes the price attractive. That was before the price increased by MYR1 for every item on the set lunch menu in October 2015 and they added new items to that menu too.

I have tried their Garlic Shrimp Spaghetti with Goo Leng Ping drink (MYR14.90++ 10% service charge and 6% GST = MYR17.40 back then. Now the price is MYR15.90++). I did not really know what Goo Leng Ping was when I ordered it. Turned out to be a rose syrup with milk drink. The pasta was a bit too al dente for my liking.

Another lunch set that I have ordered is their Panini Fish Burger and chips with a Lime juice drink without sugar (MYR13.90++ 10% service charge and 6% GST = MYR16.20 back then. Now the price is MYR14.90++). The deep fried fish fillet is like those that one buys frozen in a box from supermarket to deep fry at home, just passable.

I did not take any photos for the meals above but I did take some photos when I ordered the baked soy sauce chicken rice set with a Lime juice drink without sugar (MYR12.60++ 10% service charge and 6% GST = MYR14.70 back then. Now the price is MYR13.60++). As chicken is my last choice, I was going to order something else but I changed my mind at the last minute when I placed the order so chicken it was. The whole chicken leg was very flavourful and filling.

All these were before the beef lasagna order. Now I will not eat at this place ever again.

Chicken rice set with drink - MYR13.6++ = MYR15.85 nett (price now)

Lots of rice and a big chicken leg - very filling so I did not finish eating the rice. I forgot to ask them to give me half of the normal portion of rice.

New item

I saw this new item in the menu and ordered it.

This is the most expensive set in the set lunch menu. Between beef or fish, I chose beef. From the photo above, can you tell why I should not have ordered this?

Chose Lime Juice with ice but without any sugar. Part of the set lunch.

My order was served last (of 4) and I was shocked to see it being so watery and it was cold. I was so stupid that I attempted to eat it but it was so horrible eating it cold so I had to send it back to the kitchen to be heated up. It came back warm at the sides and only just luke warm in the middle. Stupid me just ate the whole thing swimming in water and paid MYR17.80 +6% GST and +10% service charge = MYR20.75 for it without making a complaint.

When I told my sister, she said from the photo in the menu you can already tell that it is a frozen dish since it is placed in an aluminium container. The kitchen barely defrosted it before serving it which was the reason it was cold. She told me you should have known better than to order lasagna from a place like that. I have eaten two other dishes from their set lunch menu during previous visits and they taste ok so I thought this should be ok too.

It was so watery. Just look at the amount of water. I found this online - "How do you freeze lasagna so it doesn't get watery once defrosted?" and to think they do not know this. I wonder who else got served lasagna in that state and ate it like I did without making a complaint. I also wonder have they improved on this. No way am I going back to order this again to get the answer to my 2nd question. Come to think of it, this was such a bad experience that I am never setting foot into any of their branches ever again.

Mr Fish

We saw this eatery being featured in a food programme on TV so we went there for breakfast at 10am.

I ordered a combo set - Deep fried fish fillet (Barramundi - siakap) thin meehoon with lemongrass drink (the other choice is a barley drink) for MYR15.50 nett.

The prawn fritter comes with the combo set.

This small bowl of rojak comes with the combo set too.

Non-fried fish fillet (Barramundi) thin mee hoon - MYR12.90 nett for a small portion. I will be back to eat this non-fried fillet mee hoon.

Deep fried fish head thin meehoon without milk in the soup - MYR11.90 for a small portion.

Teochew braised duck - special of the day - MYR5 nett. One group is allowed to order two plates of this only.

I ordered Combo A out of 5 combo sets. There is a loyalty card for you to collect 10 stamps to  get 1 free combo set - 1 stamp for 1 combo set ordered.

Please click on the menu above to view a larger photo. For combo A, you are allowed to choose F1 to F4 on the menu as the main dish. The menu says no MSG used.

What's for lunch?

Assam Laksa with lots of raw vegetables on top - shredded cucumber, lettuce and onion in a sourish broth thick with shredded fish. Tastes good although it was more sweet than sour and not that hot and spicy.

Instead of the usual thick rice noodles (Lai Fun) which I find difficult to chew because they are springy, I requested for yellow noodle and mee hoon. A bowl of assam laksa costs MYR8.90 and I added more fish which costs MYR2.90 so the total price of my lunch is MYR11.80 nett. I could have ordered the set lunch for MYR11.50 nett which consists of a bowl of noodle and a drink.

Also on the menu are Curry Laksa, Pan Mee, Herbal Chicken Soup with Rice and Nasi Lemak Rendang (Coconut Milk Rice with Chicken Rendang).

Ah Cheng Laksa at The Sphere, next to Simply Mel's. At 12noon, there is usually a queue for lunch.

Place your order, pay, wait for your number to be shown on the display and then collect your bowl of noodle from the counter.

Strawberry I c

My friend told me that this ice cream tastes just like HD Strawberry ice cream so since I like to eat strawberry ice cream, I bought myself one to try for MYR2.50 nett.

There are real strawberry pieces in it. Tastes nice, sweet as expected but not that sweet because the coldness of the ice cream offset the sweetness. Yes, it can substitute those expensive strawberry ice cream for me so I will be eating it again when the timing is right.

Updated later (24102018 Wed from draft)

Bought these 2 sticks of iNatural ice cream sticks from Cold Storage, Jaya One.

Durian and Strawberry Flavour each.

To my surprise, even the Strawberry flavour ice cream contains Coconut Milk. After eating it, I can confirm that the taste of Strawberry does not go well with the taste of Coconut Milk.
