大埔笋粄

Mei Chai Bao (梅菜包) - Preserved vege Steamed Buns (2) at MYR4 and Hakka Bamboo Shoot Dumplings (2) - 大埔笋粄at MYR5 -Ying Ker Lou's teatime prices.

Soft buns with sweetish Mei Chai and pieces of pork.

The pieces of bamboo shoots are visible here and I like the yam taste of the "skin".

梅州萝卜丸

Mei Zhou Carrots Balls with Minced Pork & Dried Prawns (梅州萝卜丸) - MYR5 (tea time price) at Ying Ker Lou.

I can taste the dried shrimp (har bee) and shredded white radish but not the minced pork and I find it a bit dry.

Ramie Leaf

This Ramie plant grows very easily. I have planted it successfully by just cutting a branch and sticking it into the ground. It will grow on its own without needing much care.

Close up of Ramie leaves

Hakka Chu Yap Ban (粗叶粄) - MYR5 (tea time price) at Ying Ker Lou.

Chu Yap Ban is made from glutinous rice flour and Ramie Leaves (粗叶). Ramie leaves give it the almost-black colour.

The fillings are made from preserved radish. The glutinous "skin" is sweet whereas the fillings taste savoury but when eaten together, the resulting taste leans towards sweet.

Set Menu Changed?

After Chloe's mommy left me a comment about the cheapest breakfast in a mall, I went in search of the Old Town White Coffee outlet in Midvalley Megamall and found it located up on the highest floor. Recently the set menu for breakfast (until 11am) has been changed so some of the set options mentioned here are no longer available and the prices mentioned may differ too.

Found the OldTown White Coffee outlet

Breakfast set: a drink and nasi lemak bungkus - MYR 3.90 - after 10% service charge, the price is MYR4.29

Breakfast set: A drink and Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun - MYR10.90 - after 10% service charge, the price is MYR11.99

Breakfast set: A drink, soft boiled eggs and a double serving of kaya butter toasts below costs MYR7.90 - after 10% service charge, the price is MYR8.69

For the double serving of kaya butter toasts, the are 4 pieces in total. Only 2 pieces are shown in the photo above.

There are only two thin strips of butter on the toasts - how strange - I don't think we spread butter on toasts in this way at home.

One of the best?

Compare the mee in my previous post here with this plate below - do they look similar? which one looks more appetising?

This plate of Hokkien mee is said to be one of the best in town. I think it costs around MYR12.90 (I was told that it may just costs about MYR11.80 but that person wasn't sure either. If I were to go there again, I will find out for sure) and is from the Kim Lian Kee stall in Lot 10 Hutong Food Court. The main outlet is at Petaling Street.

Food court meal

A set lunch bought from a stall in a food court of a mall. Passable only for MYR10.50 - half a braised egg, tofu, rice, roast duck meat, plain soup and a plate of bean sprout. Normally I don't eat in food courts at the malls because I find the food nothing to shout about but sometimes when hunger strikes and the mind is blank, to the food court I go for a quick meal.

Spanish Mackerel

This piece of Spanish mackerel or "kao yu" in Cantonese or "ikan tenggiri" costs MYR5 (sold in the economy rice stall that I frequent). Expensive but very tasty so once in a while I will indulge myself and eat it.
