Yang Kee

With the water rationing going on where each place is supplied 2 days of water alternately, we will go to places where they are having their 2nd day of water supply for meals. The previous Friday, it was at Overseas Union Garden (OUG). We looked around OUG and settled on Yang Kee which is near to the morning street market. The last time we ate in this eatery is 10 years ago.

We ordered two bowls of beef noodles (small for MYR6.5 each) - one with beef meat balls only and one with mixed beef items - and one small bowl of beef meat and white radish stew (MYR8). Prices are nett so total bill came up to MYR21 as we did not order any drinks.

This is the bowl of mixed beef items closeup shot and I did not include the bowl of noodles here.

Close up of the beef and white radish stew - very tasty with sizable melt-in-your-mouth tender beef pieces and not salty at all - the taste is just right.

This is the minced beef that we removed from our bowls of noodle and did not eat because it is too salty. It was like eating salt directly. While we were debating whether to feed back to the lady-in-charged, we overheard another couple telling the lady-in-charged that the minced beef was salty during their last visit when they were ordering their meal so we decide to feed back that this time it is salty too but all the lady-in-charged did was asked the other customers whether it is salty or not, without bothering to go to the kitchen to taste it herself. One man said not salty, another couple said yes.

To the couple who just placed their order and complained about the salty minced beef, the lady-in-charged just replied "give you less minced beef then". Guess we will not be ordering the noodles with minced beef if we ever decide to visit again but what I can safely say is Soong Kee Beef Noodles at Jalan Tun Tan Siew in KL town serves better minced beef in their beef noodles.

Feet - Yes or No?

Do you eat chicken feet? When I was a child, I like to eat chicken feet but now I only eat those that are cooked in a certain way.

Chicken Feet braised with Mushrooms and wanton noodle (MYR5.5) - I like to eat chicken feet cooked with chinese mushrooms.

Chicken Feet and dates soup (MYR3.5) - I don't eat chicken feet cooked in soup.

Zun Revisited

I went for lunch again at The Zun Express before their reopening promotion ends tomorrow (today is the last day) and ordered a bowl of soup and the same noodles I had on my last visit. This time I rearranged the individual food items before taking a photo to show them clearly.

Abalone Sauce Yee Fu Noodle (MYR14.80 - but with 50% off, it only costs MYR7.40). Can see the Bak Choy now with the carrots, straw mushrooms, chinese mushrooms, shrimps, abalone mushrooms, fish slices.

Dry Scallop Lean Meat soup - MYR13.80 - I found yam pieces in the soup and the colour of this soup is creamy white but it did not taste like it has cream or milk in it and it is tasty. Total price (10% service charge, 6% gov. tax) is MYR24.60.

Hello Kitty Eco Bag

Chloe's mommy made a comment about Hello Kitty Eco Bag in my Doraemon Eco Bag post so when I spotted these bags being sold in Cold Storage, The Gardens, I immediately thought of her. The bag costs MYR6.99 each.

Background with white stripes.

Full pink background but with the same kitty picture as the white stripes bags.

Wai Kei

Wai Kei Restaurant (not air-conditioned), Old Klang Road serves tasty home-style dishes and is usually packed for dinner during weekends. It is located in one of the shop lots just beside The Scott Garden so we will park the car there and walk over to Wai Kei for dinner.

This is what we usually order (for four persons):

Chicken cooked in Chinese Wine. Medium portion for MYR30. I prefer the fried egg with many slices of ginger in the wine soup than the chicken. The wine is quite sweet. I order this dish for the wine and the fried egg with ginger rather than for the chicken.

Steamed Tilapia fish with ginger sauce (MYR30). I like the ginger sauce. The fish usually is very fresh although once we got a fish that had been obviously frozen for some time and then defrosted because the meat was all crumbly and falling apart.

Yong Tau Fu (assorted vegetables with fish paste in them) - MYR1.2 per piece. Photo shows Brinjal and Bitter Gourd pieces. The fish paste is firm and full of fish taste (the good taste). The pieces are big and tasty so this is one of the places that serves good Yong Tau Fu.

Rice is MYR1 per portion and as only two of us had rice, the total bill came up to MYR66.80 which is quite reasonable for it works out to be only MYR16.70 per person.

Menya Musashi Ramen

Both of us shared a Ramen Set during lunch one day at Menya Musashi, a Ramen Specialty Eatery that has outlets in Singapore too. This is because I couldn't handle a bowl of Ramen by myself as the portion is large.

Lunch Set for MYR35 : A bowl of basic Ramen (There are 4 choices of soup - original, black garlic, red chilli, yellow mustard), green tea (choice of hot or cold), salad, a medium bowl of teriyaki pork rice, a plate of 3 gyoza. The egg is not included in the lunch set.

Gyoza : included in the lunch set. It is the normal Japanese gyoza and is not oily.

Green Tea : included in the lunch set. We chose hot green tea. This green tea is very thick with green tea powder. If you like thick green tea, you will like this.

Ala carte: Egg for MYR2. I think the yolk is too runny so I did not eat this but my husband seemed to like it.

Condiment provided: Chilli Pepper mixed and Fried Garlic (not oily at all). Both are covered of course, we just uncovered them for a photo session and we took extra care not to breathe or talk into them.

Close up shot of the Ramen. We chose black garlic soup which is very flavourful.

Put some fried garlic in the bowl.

Close up shot of the Teriyaki pork rice. Although this is a medium portion but there is a lot of rice and meat  in this bowl. We were very full after eating this set meal that is meant for one person.

Ramen Set Menu choices

After 10% service charge and 6% gov. tax, the total bill came up to MYR42.90 and credit card payment is accepted. We like this ramen better than Ippudo ramen. This eatery is located in Eat Paradise Isetan, 2nd Floor of One Utama shopping mall (old wing) but there are two other outlets in the Klang valley. We highly recommend Ramen Lovers to try this.

Lai Lai Desserts

Recently I have been eating at a simple desserts shop that serves very affordable deep fried Chinese pastries like "Ham Chim Peng, Ma Keok, Kap Choong, Yau Char Koay (Cantonese)", economy mee hoon (with or without curry chicken), congee and "tong sui" (literally means sugar water). I have make it a point to only go there once a week because too much deep fried food and sweet food is not good for me - I have to remind myself.

Red bean "tong sui" - not that sweet. Black glutinous rice "tong sui" - this is sweeter - costs MYR2.40 each. You can ask for a smaller bowl of "tong sui" that costs MYR1.50 only.

Two sweet "Ham Chim Peng" with red bean fillings, one "Kap Choong" (the one with glutinous rice in the middle) and one "Ma Keok" (literally means Horse Hoof - the one with the sesame seeds on it). Each costs MYR0.90 only.  Apart from the above, they also sell savoury "Ham Chim Peng" (flavoured with 5 spices) and "Yau Char Koay".

The "Ham Chim Peng" with red bean fillings.

The default is they will cut up whatever you ordered into smaller pieces like in the above photo. Request them not to do it if you prefer to eat it while it is whole. The above photo shows one Kap Choong, one Ham Chim Peng and one sesame glutinous ball with red bean fillings (also MYR0.90).

Plain economy mee hoon costs MYR2.50 per plate and chicken potatoes curry costs an additional MYR1.50 only.

Lai Lai Desserts is located along Jalan Tuanku 4, Salak South Garden and it is closed on Mondays. Prices are nett and payments in cash only. Opening hours: 10.30am to 6pm (Tue to Sun).
